The Boathouse

Manteo Christmas Parade-Saturday, December 6,2014

Last Saturday was a lot of fun! I got to be in my first parade riding in the bucket on the front end of a fire truck! The gals and guys at the Manteo Fire station were wonderful. They helped Santa a lot that day and they did a great job decorating the truck, which ( when you think about it) isn't very easy to decorate! Going down the parade route I tried to make eye contact with every child. I think I did for most of them too!
We took pictures in the boathouse before and... after the parade and the line ran down the block after the parade. So Santa heard lots of wishes that day. I must confess that I don't always heard the hearts desire of every child because it may be mumbled or spoken so softly that I don't catch it. In those cases I usually say "Be sure to have Mommy write that down for Santa, OK?"
On Saturday there were lots of requests for Legos, especially from the girls, which surprised Ol' Santa a bit, but I had several of the young ladies ask specifically for the Architectural version of Legos! I also had a young man ask for a rolling pin so he could make cookies for Santa! Now that's a great way to move to the top of the nice list! One little guy asked for a pogo stick and a trampoline. Santa made sure these were not going to be used at the same time! One young lady asked for a robot that would do what she tells it to and a little guy asked for another fire station. Why you ask? Because he couldn't find the first one, Silly! Thank goodness his bedroom hadn't burned down in the meantime!  Two requests that stuck in my mind was the little girl who wanted half of an American Girl Doll, but she was unsure if she wanted the top or bottom half  and the boy who wanted a left handed compound bow but he would not be using it to shoot my reindeer!  There were also two girls that wanted football jerseys.  The first one wanted a Carolina Panthers Cam Newton jersey and the other wanted a Chicago Bears Jersey for Jay Cutler!
We did over a hundred families at the Boathouse but the one that stood out was the little girl that said she just wanted everyone to be happy! I told her that I would work on that but I needed her help and I need your help also! Let's all help this season, make as many people happy as you can!
Until next time that's it from Santa's lap!

The Dancers at the Manteo Tree Lighting wanted a picture with Santa

A list for Santa

Manteo Tree Lighting- December 5, 2014

Well, Santa has really fallen behind in his recording! For those of you new to the North Pole, Santa usually posts a brief description of what he has learned from the children who sit on his lap(and he learns something new each adventure) He then goes into more detail in his diary and includes pictures! I will give you the website at the end of this entry! Last Friday night Santa participated in the tree lighting in downtown Manteo and had a real good time! After making ...a brief appearance on the balcony at the Courthouse( I guess some missed seeing him entirely) Santa welcomed well over 100 children onto his lap (Santa has a Biiiiiiiig lap)
There were a lot of requests for Uggs this year, of various colors, as well as roller skates! Ninja Turtles seem to be popular this year also with the usual requests for trucks from the boys( A bigger truck and a truck within a truck were two specific requests) and baby dolls from the girls(American Girl and Barbie) There are some constants in life!
Santa did get a request for a unicorn and Pegasus( "you know, that horse that flies, Santa") but one little girl wanted a Manatee and a little boy wanted a donkey! Then there was the girl that wanted a mermaid tail that swam for her when she put it on. And one real little fellow wanted a live dragon but when I explained that they ate little boys, he was rethinking that request!   Perhaps the most unusual was the youngster who wanted a ticket to Switzerland and she was very clear that both her parents knew she wants that.  Santa would sure like to know the story behind that one!  Another little guy wanted bricks or something made of wood, a budding builder maybe.  There were a couple of requests for ponies and I told them as I always do for requests for live pets that Mom and Dad have to sign off on it and that produces some interesting reactions.  All the way from, "Oh, it's alright with them" to  "Oh, I guess I better think of something else."  One little one asked for all the Princesses, but she wasn't sure who they were when I asked her!

After a little one presented me with a picture she had drawn and colored of Comet(she was very positive that's who it was) and the resemblance was striking, I had my favorite visitor of the night. A young lady about 8 or so sat on my lap and explained that the ONE thing she really wanted was an end to the War in Iraq. I asked if her Dad or Mom were over there and she said no, her Dad was a preacher. She just wanted that war to end! A little one who is being raised in a wonderful manner, very unselfish!  And that's the story from Santa's lap for today!

Saturday, November 29, 2014

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to work with the wonderful Jennifer Snell of Tail Waggin Photography. She is one of the best on the Outer Banks! We were at the Holiday Bazaar at The Ramada and we had a great time. Santa had his picture taken with two really cute dogs and several children. Santa also got to see several old friends because he is now seeing little ones grow up through the years he has been here. It's now his 3rd Christmas on the Outer Banks. One of the Highlights of the afternoon was the little Kindergarten girl who brought her list that she had written out herself.

The First 2014 Appearance

Well, yesterday was this Santa's first appearance so it must be time for the first entry of 2014 in Santa's Diary. The second Saturday in November seems to have become Santa's kickoff!

Anyway, it was a busy day at Belk yesterday.  In three hours I visited with about a hundred children aged from - 1 month to about 70!  Now I know a word of explanation is in order here.  The -1 month was a lady whose baby girl is due next month and the 70ish was a young-at-heart clerk, both of whom sat on my lap.  It was wonderful how the whole staff at Belk really got into the spirit of the event!  I think I had every one of the ladies on my lap for a picture sometime during the afternoon.  There was also a group of ladies who were celebrating one of their birthdays and they needed their picture taken with Santa. The first young lady was someone I go to church with.   I think my favorite might have been the group of  little ones, all under 6 or so who made a group of 12 in front of me for their picture!

The requests Santa got yesterday ran the usual gambit from baby dolls to dirt bikes but there were a few surprises, as there always are.  One little girl asked for an American Girl doll.  When I asked her which one, she said she wanted one that looked like her, "Oh, a real pretty one!"  I said, which drew a giggle.  There was a request for a Barbie also but I think the requests for American Girl dolls have been outnumbering the Barbie requests for the last couple of years! There were two brothers that wanted dirt bikes but the really fascinating thing was their sister wanted one too!  An entire family of racers!  I did remind them that they needed to be sure to wear their helmets!  A little boy wanted a turtle but when I was explaining that Mom and Dad had to agree on any live animal, since it usually falls to them to take care of, his Dad said , "I think he means a Ninja Turtle"  and that simplified things quite a bit.  Another little girl wanted a puppy and after I explained about Mom and Dad needing to sign off on it, she asked for a Hamster, which falls in the same category, so she decided she would like to have a stuffed kitty.  Legos were on one little fellow's list and there was one young lady who brought in a list on a printed form.  I remember that #8 was a tutu!  Finally there was one little girl who asked for "sheep, a lot of sheep!"  As I saw her Mother's eyes grow quite large, I explained that I thought she was referring to stuffed sheep, since we had been discussing the stuffed reindeer she was holding clutched to her chest!  Needless to say, Mom breathed a huge sigh of relief!
And that's the latest from Santa's lap.

An Early Santa Experience

It is only October 4th but Santa has been spotted: read on!  I had been subbing all week for the Construction teacher at First Flight High and his morning duty was the carpool line. So all week I've been waving people along the line and some waved or smiled, which was nice, and I began to recognize some faces. Friday as I'm standing there waving folks through, there was a momentary stoppage, as frequently happens, and the lady driving the minivan that was stopped right in front of me, jumped out, ran around her car, and gave me a big hug! She said she had to do it because I looked just like Santa Claus! I have to tell you, it made my day!

Santa also made an appearance at The Lost Colony this summer for Christmas in August!  Here is photo proof:
